What Is Passive House?

Passive House is a sustainable standard and design principle for homes and other buildings that focuses on achieving exceptional energy efficiency, thermal comfort and air quality.

The concept was pioneered in the early 1990s in Germany, and the German term 'Passivhaus' is sometimes still used in the UK. The Passivhaus Institut (PHI) developed the standard and continues to guide its adoption and support the creation of buildings that maintain a consistent indoor temperature throughout the year and significantly reduce energy bills.

How Does Passive House Work?

Making the most of natural heat sources such as sunlight, passive house design also then uses the components of a building - such as high levels of insulation, airtight construction and high performance glazing with thermal breaks - to minimise the loss of that heat.

This 'fabric-first' approach uses a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system to achieve energy efficiency, instead of relying on traditional heating and cooling systems.

Passive House Glass Doors & Windows

Glass is one of the main areas of heat loss and gain in a building. In passive houses, therefore, glass doors and windows are a key focus for thermally-efficient design. They play a vital role in creating a stable, comfortable indoor environment with minimal energy demand.

To perform to passive house standards, glass systems must be able to reach overall U-values (known as Uw-values) of 0.89 W/m²K. Uw-values are a key metric for the passive house standard that encompasses not just the glass itself (Ug-value), but the frame as well (Uf-value).

Low U-values are possible through features such as:

  • High performance double or triple glazing
  • Advanced thermal breaks
  • Thermally insulated profiles
  • Robust sealing systems
  • Technologies like heat recovery systems.

They may also use solar control glass to maximise solar gain in cooler months and minimise it in warmer months.

Solarlux Glazing for Passive Projects

Why choose Solarlux for your passive house project?

Solarlux is a byword for stunning, German-engineered glass systems crafted from the very best materials and designed to deliver exceptional performance.

Some of these glass systems can meet passive standards, although they are not Passive House certified. This makes them ideal for homeowners aiming for energy efficiency and passive house principles.

By choosing one of our passive standard bi-fold doors, sliding doors or glass extension, you'll also get all the outstanding features that run through every Solarlux product:

  • Some of the slimmest sightlines and largest single glass panes on the market
  • High performance glazing
  • Premium quality, durable materials, sustainably sourced and processed
  • Bespoke solutions for any house or style with wide range of colours and materials
  • Complies with all relevant British Standards and Building Regulations
  • Highly weather resistant including wind and snow load bearing requirements
  • Secure locking systems and safety features
  • Optional flush threshold for full accessibility
  • Lighting, shading and ventilation options
  • Single 10-year warranty covering the whole system

Passive House Certified or Passive House Standard?

If you are trying to maximise energy efficiency in your home by following passive house design principles, you'll find products that are passive house certified and products that meet passive house standards.

So what's the difference between certified and standard?

Passive Standard
This is when a product, glass system or building is designed to follow passive house principles and performance targets as defined by the Passivhaus Institute. However, it may not have been formally reviewed or tested.

Passive Certified
This means the product, glass system or building has been officially proven to meet passive house requirements. It has been independently assessed, tested and verified by an accredited Passive House certifier.

Yorkshire Team with Passive House Glazing Expertise

Our in-house team of glazing designers and installers includes a qualified passive house tradesperson with a specialism in the building envelope.

Trained, tested and accredited by the Passive House Institute (PHI), our specialist uses the institute's own energy-modelling tool, the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP), to help us design and deliver glass systems that fulfil passive house standards.

He also ensures we install our passive-standard bi-folds, sliding doors and Wintergarden glass extensions in the correct way, so as to maintain their intended level of thermal efficiency.

We are an approved Solarlux partner with more than 30 years' experience in construction and glazing. Our team of glazing designers, engineers and installers is based in Leeds and work with homeowners across Yorkshire to align their homes with passive house principles.
